What Is a Growth Marketing Agency? (And How It's Different From a Regular Ads Agency)

Two people sketching a plan on a whiteboard, the kind of planning a growth marketing agency does

If you've been shopping for marketing help, you've probably seen the term "growth marketing agency" next to "performance marketing agency," "digital marketing agency," and plain old "ads agency" — often used interchangeably by people who don't actually make a distinction. There is a real difference, and it matters for what you should expect to get.

A regular ads agency runs your ads

Most ads agencies do exactly what the name suggests: they manage your Meta or Google account, optimize bids, test creative, and report on ROAS. That's a real, valuable service — but it's scoped to one channel, and it stops at the ad click. What happens after someone lands on your site, whether your tracking is actually accurate, whether your brand gives people a reason to trust you before they buy — that's usually someone else's problem, or nobody's problem.

A growth marketing agency owns the whole system

Growth marketing treats the ad as one input into a larger system: traffic generation, conversion (the page it lands on, the tracking behind it), and retention (email, retargeting, repeat purchase). The job isn't "get more clicks," it's "get more revenue," and that requires touching branding, web, automation, and analytics — not just the ad account.

  • Traffic: paid ads across platforms, plus organic/SEO
  • Conversion: landing pages, tracking accuracy, CRO
  • Retention: email automation, retargeting, brand loyalty
  • Measurement: unified analytics tying it all back to revenue, not just clicks

This is the model we built Adsup Studio around. Since 2019, the pattern we kept seeing was businesses hiring a media buyer, a web designer, and a branding freelancer separately — and none of the three ever talking to each other. The ad account gets optimized in isolation while the landing page it points to is actively losing the traffic it worked to earn.

When you actually just need an ads specialist

To be fair to single-channel agencies: if your website, tracking, and brand are already solid and you just need someone sharper at bidding and creative testing, a focused ads specialist can be the better fit. Growth marketing makes the most sense when more than one piece of the system is genuinely broken or missing — which, honestly, is most of the time for businesses under a certain size.

“We do not focus on individual services. We focus on building complete growth ecosystems.”
— Adsup Studio positioning statement

If you're not sure which camp your business is in, that's a reasonable thing to ask an agency directly before hiring them — a good one will tell you honestly whether you need the full system or just one piece of it.
